It could have been better written, and less repetitive. That said, man of the stories were interesting or provided a historical background of which many might not be aware. A real fun romp Remembering the crazy making closets we lived in ,to be excepted in the world of the 60ss Making her the woman she became, a power to be reckoned with An amazing journey ,with an amazing gal One person found this helpful. What a story from a woman who truly appreciates life! This is an honest and amazingly frank memoir by Ronni Sanlo.
When I picked it up, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I got was the highlights and lowlights of an adventurous life told in a very self-revealing way. Sanlo is a lesbian who hid from the truth and then came out of the closet during the early years of the LGBT revolution--at a time when it was not yet "okay" to be a lesbian.
And she lived a chunk of her life in Florida, a place not particularly friendly to alternative lifestyles. Sanlo strips off all the layers, admitting to her emotional conflicts, her health problems largely related to her emotions , her relationship issues, and her feelings as a mother separated from two children she deeply loved because she had admitted that she was a lesbian. We go along with her through the rough times and the better times, and she includes a timeline at the beginning of each chapter allowing us to see what was going on in the bigger world around her, while she was fighting to be fully herself in her own world.
Told with humor, it's a great story.
And I could identify with a lot of it, even if my own path was not quite as adventurous as hers. If you want to get beneath the surface of the lesbian revolution in this country, this book is for you! Ronni Sanlo's poignant recollections of 'coming out' way before it was fashionable will make you cry and laugh out loud. She left her husband when she could no longer go on living a lie and he took her children, destroyed her reputation and left her jobless, penniless and alone. Ronni's slow, determined come back is documented beautifully, and you will feel her pain when she is left homeless and cheer when she rises to become a top professor at UCLA.
The star of the movie "Letter to Anita" takes you with her as she fights the horrendous prejudice of the '70s with the tenacity and determination of a true pioneer. Don't miss this compelling novel! A painful yet heart warming journey. I cried and laughed a lot.

Most helpful customer reviews on Amazon. Couldn't put it down read it all in 1 and a half days. What a life's experience the Author had. It was exciting, sad, funny and made me aware of a lot that went on with the LGBT communities that I was not aware of. I'm almost in the same age group as the Author but I was in the Military during all that time period and wasn't aware of how bad that situation was. We've come a long way but still have to fight to keep out rights. The book was almost an oral history of a time and place.
